Drilling Problem Solving
 Identification, Analysis & Solutions
Duration: 5 Days
Target Audience: Drilling Engineers, Wellsite Supervisors, Toolpushers, Mud Engineers, Operations Engineers, Drilling Superintendents
Delivery Mode: Classroom / Virtual with Interactive Workshops, Calculations, and Real-World Case Studies
Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Course Overview

This course equips participants with practical skills to identify, analyze, and resolve common and complex drilling problems. Topics include lost circulation, stuck pipe, wellbore instability, kick detection, hole cleaning, torque & drag, and bit performance issues. The course focuses on systematic problem-solving techniques to minimize NPT and drilling costs.

Day-by-Day Outline

Day 1 – Introduction to Drilling Problems & Root Cause Analysis

  • - Overview of common drilling problems and NPT impact
  • - Systematic approaches to problem identification
  • - Root cause analysis techniques (Fishbone diagrams, 5-Whys)
  • - Data collection and interpretation for problem diagnosis
  • - Exercise: Perform root cause analysis on historical drilling problem cases

Day 2 – Lost Circulation & Wellbore Instability

  • - Mechanisms of lost circulation: induced, natural, cavernous
  • - Lost circulation materials (LCM) and plugging techniques
  • - Wellbore instability: sloughing shales, wellbore collapse
  • - Preventive measures: mud weight, hole conditioning
  • - Workshop: Develop a lost circulation contingency plan

Day 3 – Stuck Pipe, Torque & Drag

  • - Stuck pipe mechanisms: differential sticking, pack-off, mechanical sticking
  • - Early warning signs and preventive actions
  • - Torque & drag calculations for vertical and deviated wells
  • - Hole cleaning best practices
  • - Exercise: Calculate torque & drag profiles and recommend solutions

Day 4 – Well Control, Kicks & Bit Performance

  • - Kick detection methods and warning signs
  • - Shut-in procedures and kick tolerance calculations
  • - Bit balling, dull grading, and bit performance optimization
  • - Bit selection for various formations
  • - Workshop: Analyze kick scenarios and design a well control response plan

Day 5 – Integrated Problem Solving & Case Studies

  • - Integrated approaches to manage simultaneous drilling problems
  • - Performance monitoring tools and real-time data analysis
  • - Case studies of complex drilling problems and resolutions
  • - Post-well reviews and lessons learned process
  • - Capstone Project: Diagnose multiple drilling problems from a real well and develop a comprehensive action plan
