Drilling Problems
Identification, Analysis
&
Resolution with DrillSIM 5000
Duration: 5 Days
Target Audience: Drilling Engineers, Wellsite Supervisors, Toolpushers, Drilling Superintendents, Operations Engineers
Delivery Mode: Classroom + Practical Session Using DrillSIM 5000 Simulator
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Course Overview
This course equips participants with the skills to identify, analyze, and solve common and complex drilling problems such as stuck pipe, lost circulation, wellbore instability, and kicks. Participants will gain hands-on experience with the DrillSIM 5000 simulator to apply problem-solving techniques in a realistic environment, enhancing operational safety and efficiency.
Day-by-Day Outline
Day 1 – Introduction to Drilling Problems & Root Cause Analysis
- - Overview of common drilling problems and NPT impact
- - Systematic approaches to problem identification
- - Root cause analysis tools (Fishbone diagrams, 5-Whys)
- - Data collection and interpretation for troubleshooting
- - Exercise: Perform root cause analysis on historical drilling incidents
Day 2 – Lost Circulation & Wellbore Instability
- - Mechanisms of lost circulation: induced and natural fractures
- - Lost circulation materials (LCM) and plugging strategies
- - Wellbore instability: sloughing shales, collapse, ballooning
- - Best practices for prevention and mitigation
- - Workshop: Develop a lost circulation contingency plan
Day 3 – Stuck Pipe, Torque & Drag Problems
- - Mechanisms of stuck pipe: differential sticking, pack-off, mechanical sticking
- - Early warning signs and prevention strategies
- - Torque & drag calculations and friction factor considerations
- - Hole cleaning optimization to minimize stuck pipe risk
- - Exercise: Calculate torque & drag profiles and stuck pipe indicators
Day 4 – Well Control & Kick Management
- - Early kick detection and warning signs
- - Shut-in procedures and kill sheet preparation
- - Kick tolerance calculations and gas behavior in mud
- - Well control in narrow pressure windows
- - Workshop: Analyze kick scenarios and prepare kill sheets
Day 5 – DrillSIM 5000 Simulator Hands-On Session
- - Introduction to DrillSIM 5000 simulator functions
- - Simulating drilling problems: lost circulation, stuck pipe, kicks
