Course Overview

This course provides comprehensive training in horizontal and directional drilling, covering well planning, trajectory design, BHA selection, directional drilling tools, torque & drag considerations, and wellbore stability. A full day is dedicated to Landmark Compass simulation for planning and optimizing directional well paths.

Day-by-Day Outline

Day 1 – Directional Drilling Fundamentals

  • - Introduction to directional drilling concepts and applications
  • - Types of directional wells: build-and-hold, S-well, J-well, horizontal wells
  • - Key directional drilling terms and tools
  • - Exercise: Classify well profiles and their applications

Day 2 – Trajectory Planning & Survey Calculations

  • - Dogleg severity (DLS) and toolface orientation
  • - Survey calculation methods: minimum curvature, balanced tangential
  • - Building smooth well paths with minimum tortuosity
  • - Anti-collision planning for multi-well pads
  • - Workshop: Calculate directional surveys for planned trajectories

Day 3 – BHAs & Directional Drilling Tools

  • - Types of BHAs for directional control
  • - Rotary steerable systems vs. mud motors
  • - Bit selection for directional wells
  • - Deflection tools: bent subs, bent housings
  • - Exercise: Design a BHA for a horizontal well section

Day 4 – Torque & Drag, Hole Cleaning & Stability

  • - Torque and drag modeling in high-angle and horizontal wells
  • - Hole cleaning strategies for long horizontal laterals
  • - Managing wellbore stability in reactive shales
  • - Vibration and stick-slip mitigation
  • - Workshop: Model torque & drag profiles for a horizontal well plan

Day 5 – Landmark Compass Simulation & Case Studies

  • - Introduction to Landmark Compass interface and workflows
  • - Building well trajectories with geological targets
  • - Anti-collision scans and clearance analysis
  • - Optimizing trajectories for drilling efficiency
  • - Capstone Project: Design and optimize a horizontal well using Compass, including anti-collision planning
