Duration: 5 Days
Target Audience: Logging Engineers, Drilling Engineers, Petrophysicists, Geologists, Wellsite Supervisors, Technical Managers
Delivery Mode: Classroom / Virtual with Tool Demonstrations, Data Interpretation Exercises, and Case Studies
Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Course Overview

This intensive course focuses on the principles, applications, and interpretation of Measurement-While-Drilling (MWD) and Logging-While-Drilling (LWD) tools for real-time formation evaluation. Participants will learn about tool physics, data acquisition, quality control, and integration of MWD/LWD data into petrophysical analysis and reservoir characterization.

  • - Downhole telemetry methods (mud pulse, electromagnetic, wired pipe)
  • - Basic components: directional sensors, gamma ray, resistivity tools
  • - MWD tool physics and directional measurements
  • - Exercise: Analyze directional survey data from MWD tools

Day 2 – Formation Evaluation with LWD Tools

  • - Principles of LWD resistivity, density, neutron, and sonic tools
  • - LWD spectral gamma ray measurements for lithology identification
  • - Real-time porosity and density data interpretation
  • - Depth matching and log corrections

  • - LWD tools for high-angle/horizontal wells
  • - Challenges of tool placement and dogleg severity
  • - Exercise: Plan tool BHA placement for a horizontal section

Day 4 – Data Acquisition, Transmission, and Quality Control

  • - Data transmission rates and limitations
  • - Real-time monitoring and data quality assurance
  • - Noise sources and error identification in MWD/LWD data
  • - Environmental corrections for LWD logs
  • - Workshop: QC LWD logs for common acquisition issues

Day 5 – Integration, Applications & Case Studies

  • - Integrating MWD/LWD data with wireline logs and seismic interpretation
