Rig Equipment & Selection
 Design, Selection & Simulator-Based
Duration: 5 Days
Target Audience: Drilling Engineers, Rig Supervisors, Toolpushers, Rig Managers, Well Planners, Operations Engineers
Delivery Mode: Classroom + Practical Sessions Including Two Days of Simulator-Based Exercises
Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Course Overview

This course provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of drilling rig components, equipment selection criteria, performance limitations, and operational best practices. Participants will gain hands-on experience with simulators to reinforce rig equipment operation, selection, troubleshooting, and optimization.

Day-by-Day Outline

Day 1 – Introduction to Rig Types & Main Components

  • - Overview of land, jack-up, semi-submersible, and drillship rigs
  • - Derrick, mast, substructure, rotary table, drawworks
  • - Hoisting system components and load ratings
  • - Power systems: diesel-electric, SCR, AC rigs
  • - Exercise: Identify rig types and key equipment using real rig schematics

Day 2 – Circulating & Rotating Systems

  • - Mud pumps, standpipe manifold, mud pits, and solids control equipment
  • - Top drive vs. rotary table drive systems
  • - Drillstring and BHA components related to rig equipment
  • - Swivel, kelly, rotary hose, and power swivel functions
  • - Workshop: Select equipment specifications for a specific well profile

Day 3 – Rig Selection, Load Calculations & Safety Considerations

  • - Factors influencing rig selection: well depth, hole size, environment
  • - Calculating hook load, drawworks capacity, and setback loads
  • - Rig floor equipment layout for efficient operations
  • - Safety devices: crown saver, traveling block safety, hoisting system inspections
  • - Exercise: Evaluate rig specifications for a deep HPHT well

Day 4 – Simulator-Based Rig Equipment Operation

  • - Introduction to rig equipment simulator environment
  • - Simulating hoisting, rotating, and circulating systems operation
  • - Simulating real-time equipment failures and troubleshooting exercises
  • - Practicing rig-up and rig-down operations with safety checks
  • - Team Exercise: Conduct simulated rig start-up and equipment checks

Day 5 – Advanced Simulator Practice & Equipment Troubleshooting

  • - Advanced equipment fault scenarios: stuck pipe response, pump failures, draw works malfunctions
  • - Communication and coordination during equipment failures
  • - Rig equipment maintenance best practices
  • - Reviewing key lessons from simulator exercises
  • - Capstone Project: Plan and execute a full rig operation using simulator, from spud to TD with equipment selection justification

Expected Learning Outcomes

  •  Identify and describe functions of key rig equipment
  •  Select appropriate rigs and equipment based on well requirements
  •  Perform load calculations to evaluate rig capability
