Enhanced Oil Recovery with Gas Injection (EORG)
Duration: 5 Days
Target Audience: Reservoir Engineers, EOR Specialists, Production Engineers, Development Planners
Delivery Mode: Classroom / Virtual with Practical Design Exercises and Case Studies
Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Course Overview

This program focuses on advanced techniques of gas-based enhanced oil recovery (EOR), including miscible and immiscible processes using CO₂, hydrocarbon gases, or nitrogen. Participants will learn about displacement mechanisms, screening criteria, injection design, monitoring, and performance evaluation of gas injection projects.

Day-by-Day Outline

Day 1 – Fundamentals of Gas-Based EOR

  •  Principles of miscible and immiscible gas flooding
  •  Minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) and its determination
  •  Vaporizing and condensing gas drive mechanisms
  •  CO₂, hydrocarbon gas, and N₂ injection processes overview
  •  Exercise: Analyze phase diagrams to determine miscibility conditions

Day 2 – Screening and Feasibility Analysis

  •  Reservoir and fluid properties favoring gas EOR
  •  Screening criteria for miscible and immiscible injection
  •  Reservoir heterogeneity and conformance considerations
  •  Economic and environmental feasibility analysis
  •  Workshop: Screen candidate reservoirs for gas injection projects

Day 3 – Design of Gas Injection Projects

  •  Injection schemes: continuous gas injection, water-alternating-gas (WAG), simultaneous injection
  •  Determining injection rates and patterns
  •  Compositional simulation of gas injection displacement
  •  Surface facilities for gas compression and recycling
  •  Exercise: Design a gas injection schedule for a target reservoir

Day 4 – Monitoring, Surveillance, and Optimization

  •  Monitoring tools: pressure, tracers, time-lapse (4D) seismic
  •  Analyzing gas breakthrough and sweep efficiency
  •  Managing gas cycling and conformance issues
  •  Surveillance planning and decision-making workflows
  •  Workshop: Interpret surveillance data to optimize gas EOR performance

Day 5 – Case Studies and Risk Management

  •  Field case studies of successful and challenging gas injection projects
  •  Risk assessment in gas EOR implementation
  •  Safety and environmental considerations of gas injection
  •  Integrating gas EOR into field development plans
  •  Capstone Project: Develop a comprehensive gas EOR proposal for a candidate reservoir

Expected Learning Outcomes

  •  Understand displacement mechanisms of miscible and immiscible gas injection
  •  Screen and evaluate reservoirs for gas-based EOR feasibility
