&
Field Applications
Duration: 5 Days
Target Audience: Reservoir Engineers, Stimulation Engineers, Production Engineers, Completion Engineers, Field Engineers
Delivery Mode: Classroom / Virtual with Design Workshops, Case Studies, and Best Practices Discussions
Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Course Overview

This course covers the principles and practices of acid stimulation for enhancing well productivity. It explores acid types, reaction mechanisms, treatment design, fluid placement techniques, and post-treatment evaluation. Participants will gain the knowledge to plan and execute effective acidizing jobs in carbonate and sandstone reservoirs.

Day-by-Day Outline

Day 1 – Fundamentals of Acid Stimulation

  • - Objectives of acidizing: matrix acidizing vs. fracture acidizing
  • - Reservoir considerations: formation mineralogy, permeability, damage mechanisms
  • - Acid-rock reactions in carbonates and sandstones
  • - Types of acids: HCl, HF, organic acids, and blended systems
  • - Exercise: Identify suitable acids for different reservoir types

Day 2 – Acid Treatment Design

  • - Data requirements: reservoir properties, damage evaluation, production data
  • - Acid concentration, volume, and rate selection
  • - Additives: corrosion inhibitors, iron control agents, surfactants
  • - Compatibility and precipitation issues
  • - Workshop: Calculate acid volumes and concentrations for a sample well

Day 3 – Fluid Placement Techniques

  • - Bullheading, coiled tubing, and pumping techniques
  • - Diversion strategies: mechanical and chemical diverters
  • - Acid placement challenges in deviated and horizontal wells
  • - Preflush and overflush design considerations
  • - Exercise: Design a placement strategy for a carbonate well

Day 4 – Execution & Field Procedures

  • - Surface equipment setup and job preparation
  • - Safety considerations: handling, storage, and transport of acids
  • - Pumping schedules and real-time monitoring
  • - Wellhead pressure management during acidizing
  • - Workshop: Develop a detailed job program for an acidizing operation

Day 5 – Post-Treatment Evaluation & Case Studies

  • - Evaluating acidizing effectiveness: production testing and well logging
  • - Pressure transient analysis post-stimulation
  • - Common issues and troubleshooting
  • - Field case studies of acid stimulation successes and failures
  • - Capstone Project: Create a comprehensive acid stimulation plan for a candidate well
