Advanced Wireline Operations
Logging, Interventions & Optimization
Duration: 5 Days
Target Audience: Experienced Wireline Engineers, Senior Well Intervention Staff, Completion Engineers, Production Engineers, Field Supervisors
Delivery Mode: Classroom / Virtual with Advanced Case Studies, Diagnostic Workshops, and Hands-on Planning Exercises
Level: Advanced

Course Overview

This advanced course provides in-depth knowledge of complex wireline operations, including advanced cased hole logging, perforating, production logging, mechanical interventions, fishing operations, and best practices for challenging well conditions. Participants will learn to plan, execute, and troubleshoot high-risk wireline tasks to improve well performance and safety.

Day-by-Day Outline

Day 1 – Advanced Logging Techniques

- High-resolution cased hole logs: ultrasonic, pulsed neutron, cement evaluation
- Advanced production logging tools for multiphase flow profiling
- Nuclear and acoustic measurements behind casing
- Data quality assurance and interpretation
- Exercise: Analyze case studies of advanced cased hole logs

Day 2 – Perforating & Explosive Operations

- Perforation design principles and strategies
- Shaped charges and gun systems: wireline-conveyed perforating (WCP)
- Depth correlation techniques and casing collar locators (CCL)
- Safety protocols for explosives handling and transportation
- Workshop: Design a perforating job for a new completion

Day 3 – Mechanical Interventions & Fishing

- Plug setting, packer manipulation, and shifting sleeves
- Common fishing scenarios and tool selection
- Strategies for retrieving lost tools and parted wire
- Preventing tool sticking and keyseat formation
- Exercise: Plan a fishing operation for a stuck wireline tool

Day 4 – Challenging Wells & Complex Conditions

- Wireline in deviated, horizontal, and HPHT wells
- Pressure control in sour environments (H₂S, CO₂)
- Managing heavy brines and high fluid viscosities
- Best practices for extreme temperature and pressure environments
- Workshop: Develop an operational plan for HPHT wireline interventions

Day 5 – Planning, Troubleshooting & Optimization

- Planning complex wireline campaigns with integrated services
- Advanced diagnostic techniques for log interpretation
- Troubleshooting wireline equipment and electronic failures
- Optimization strategies to reduce NPT (non-productive time)
- Capstone Project: Prepare a comprehensive plan for an advanced wireline intervention in a mature field
