Course Overview

This course provides participants with a solid foundation in wireline operations for oil and gas wells. It covers wireline equipment, basic logging and intervention techniques, operational planning, and essential safety practices. Participants will gain the skills needed to support wireline activities confidently and safely in field operations.

Day-by-Day Outline

Day 1 – Introduction to Wireline Operations

- What is wireline? Slickline vs. electric line
- Wireline unit components and functions
- Typical wireline operations and applications
- Basic terminology, measurements, and wireline tool strings
- Exercise: Identify and label key wireline equipment

Day 2 – Wireline Tools & Accessories

- Common tools: pulling tools, running tools, jars, stems, rope sockets
- Pressure control equipment basics
- Lubricators, grease injectors, BOPs
- Tool string assembly and redressing
- Workshop: Assemble a basic slickline tool string

Day 3 – Basic Logging & Data Acquisition

- Principles of cased hole logging
- Common wireline logs: GR, CBL, temperature, production logs
- Data acquisition basics: winches, depth control, tension monitoring
- Introduction to memory vs. real-time logging tools
- Exercise: Interpret simple wireline log examples

Day 4 – Operational Planning & Procedures

- Planning wireline interventions: objectives, equipment, logistics
- Well preparation and pre-job checks
- Standard operating procedures (SOPs) for common tasks
- Managing depth correlation and tool calibration
- Workshop: Prepare a wireline job program for a standard operation

Day 5 – Safety, Troubleshooting & Best Practices

- Wireline safety fundamentals: pressure control, H2S, dropped objects
- Emergency procedures and contingency planning
- Common wireline problems and basic troubleshooting
- Field case studies: lessons learned from wireline incidents
- Capstone Project: Develop a safety and operations plan for a basic wireline job
