Integration of Well Logs and Seismic Data
Duration: 5 Days
Target Audience: Geologists, Geophysicists, Reservoir Engineers, Petrophysicists, Interpreters
Delivery Mode: Classroom / Virtual with Interpretation Exercises
Level: Intermediate

Course Overview

This course provides a hands-on approach to integrating well log and seismic data for improved subsurface interpretation. Participants will learn techniques to create accurate well-to-seismic ties, generate synthetic seismograms, and interpret structural and stratigraphic features with confidence. The course emphasizes practical workflows and common pitfalls.

Day-by-Day Outline

Day 1 – Fundamentals of Seismic and Well Log Data

  • Seismic wave propagation basics and reflectivity
  • Well log fundamentals: acoustic, density, gamma ray
  • Depth vs. time domain: bridging the scale gap
  • Seismic resolution vs. log resolution
  • Exercise: Review and QC well logs for integration readiness

Day 2 – Time-Depth Relationship and Well-to-Seismic Tie

  • Check shot and VSP surveys: acquiring and interpreting
  • Creating time-depth charts
  • Synthetic seismogram generation: basics and best practices
  • Understanding wavelets and phase
  • Practical: Build a synthetic tie for a single well

Day 3 – Seismic Calibration and Correlation

  • Calibrating seismic data using well control
  • Aligning synthetic and seismic traces
  • Identifying misties and applying corrections
  • Correlating multiple wells to seismic lines
  • Exercise: Tie two wells on the same seismic section

Day 4 – Stratigraphic and Structural Interpretation

  • Interpreting sequence boundaries and key horizons
  • Fault identification and correlation using logs & seismic
  • Integrating petrophysical properties with seismic amplitude
  • Case studies of structural traps and stratigraphic pinch-outs
