BHA Design
Principles, Optimization & Performance
Duration: 5 Days
Target Audience: Drilling Engineers, Directional Drillers, Well Planners, Wellsite Supervisors, Drilling Superintendents
Delivery Mode: Classroom / Virtual with Hands-On Design Exercises, Calculations, and Case Studies
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Course Overview
This practical course covers the design, analysis, and optimization of bottom hole assemblies (BHAs) for directional, vertical, and horizontal wells. Participants will learn BHA components, function, stabilization strategies, toolface control, vibration mitigation, and best practices to improve drilling efficiency and wellbore quality.
Day-by-Day Outline
Day 1 – Fundamentals of BHA Components & Functions
- - Types of BHA configurations: slick, packed, pendulum, rotary steerable
- - Components: drill collars, stabilizers, jars, reamers
- - Functions of BHA elements for hole direction and stability
- - API standards and specifications for BHA tools
- - Exercise: Identify BHA configurations on schematic diagrams
Day 2 – Vertical & Directional BHA Design
- - BHAs for maintaining verticality and minimizing deviation
- - BHAs for build, hold, and drop sections
- - Dogleg severity (DLS) and its control through BHA design
- - Selection of stabilizer placement and spacing
- - Workshop: Design BHAs for vertical and build sections of a planned well
Day 3 – BHA Dynamics & Vibration Mitigation
- - Types of downhole vibrations: axial, torsional, lateral
- - Causes and effects of stick-slip, whirl, and bit bounce
- - BHA design considerations to reduce vibrations
- - Downhole measurement tools (MWD/LWD) for vibration monitoring
- - Exercise: Analyze vibration data and recommend BHA adjustments
Day 4 – Rotary Steerable Systems & Advanced BHAs
- - Principles of rotary steerable systems (RSS)
- - Differences between push-the-bit and point-the-bit systems
- - Integration of RSS into BHA design
- - Advanced tools: near-bit stabilizers, measurement subs, sensors
- - Workshop: Design a BHA with RSS for a horizontal well section
Day 5 – BHA Performance Optimization & Case Studies
- - BHA performance indicators: ROP, torque, DLS consistency
- - Optimization of weight on bit (WOB) and rotary speed (RPM)
- - Bit-BHA interaction and compatibility
- - Case studies: successes and failures in BHA design
- - Capstone Project: Develop a complete BHA program with design rationale for a complex well trajectory
